The notoriously unrelenting Chinese Communist Party would always strike back at the ignorant CEOs of entertainment companies. Such was the cost of clawing their way into Beijing and Shanghai. They became the mouthpieces of a Chinese Stalin and stripped their movies for a decade of American values. In throwing their principles to the ground and jumping through whatever uncultured silliness the Chinese censors might present, the corporate overlords of entertainment bowed their industry to the whims of dictators. “Even at such a low rate, the market is so huge that we’ll ride this by scale,” other leaders might opine. “We’ll get a higher percentage as our relationships improve,” they’d say in board meetings. For some productions, it would mean only grabbing 20% of the income brought through Chinese theaters. In the movie business, that meant taking a ridiculously low cut on the income from their films released in the Middle Kingdom. Then Walt Disney Company CEO, Robert Iger, politics with Chinese President Xi Jinping to seek approval of Shanghai Disney Resort. They were willing to do just about anything to make sure they had a taste of that sweet, sweet Chinese Yuan. Westerners bargained that the rising middle class in China, despite its communist and authoritarian rule, would be a huge boost to corporate bottom lines. They have prostrated themselves before the communist rulers of China in every unbecoming effort to get a chance at the Chinese market.
They have groveled, they have begged, they have pleaded.
Are western corporations finally waking up to the dangers of China after decades of empowering them?
